Certain smell brings you a state of calmness and peace.
I used to dislike lavender but as I grew up I started to like it. Smell is one of the quickest way to bring you back to the state you like.
It's like music set you in a certain state and you change the music depending on which state you are in and you want to be. If you are tired and need some rest then you put some soothing music, if you are hyper active and want to excess some energy at the gym then you play some up beat music.
